More than 350 Dawes County elementary students will be on the Chadron State College campus in the coming week for two events sponsored by the CSC Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department. About 310 students in kindergarten through fourth grades will participate in Challenge Day activities in the Nelson Physical Activity Center on Thursday, April 10. Chadron fourth-graders will be on campus to learn outdoor skills from CSC students Tuesday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Twenty-three students enrolled in Dawn Brammer’s theory of physical education class and 17 students from Donna Ritzen’s apparatus class will gain experience teaching students of varying physical education skills during Challenge Day. The activities will begin with kindergarten students at 8:20 a.m. and end with third- and fourth-graders at 1:35 p.m.

Brammer said the CSC students determine what to teach at the six stations and design lesson plans for each activity. The lessons are being designed to help students improve a wide range of abilities, including balance, motor skills, coordination and rhythm.

During Tuesday’s event, members of Ritzen’s camp counseling and recreation leadership classes will teach about a number of outdoor topics, including orienteering, fishing, archery, knot tying, environmental resources, map reading and animal track identification.
